The fascinating history of Lourdes, from a small mountain village to an international pilgrimage centre
The city is built on a rocky promontory, at the foot of the Pyrenees, in the natural region of Bigorre. On the 11th February 1958, when the young Bernadette Soubirous saw her first miraculous apparition in the Grotte de Massabielle cave, Lourdes was just a small mountain village. Very soon, residents from neighbouring towns and villages, who’d heard about the news, travelled to the rocky cavity in the hope that they too would witness a miracle. Over the months and years that followed, the Lourdes phenomenon grew, with believers and the mere curious visiting the city of the Marian apparition. A sanctuary was built a few years later, as well as the Basilica Notre-Dame-du-Rosaire and the Basilica of the Immaculée-Conception.
