Agen, nestled on the banks of the Garonne, is readily explored from the water’s edge...To do so, head to the Esplanade du Gravier, by the river, where you can stroll under the shade of the plane trees. Do you fancy going on a hike or mountain bike excursion? Make for Sainte-Radegonde church and pause at the top of the hill, where you’ll find a statue of the Virgin Mary, and admire the unrivalled view of the Garonne Valley. You can also head out to some of the many trails that criss-cross the Pays d’Albret region and the Gers Valley.

Are you ready to lose yourself in the back streets and historic centre of this charming city? Head for place des Laitiers, the epicentre of Agen activity, before heading to rue des Cornières, with its beautiful arcades and rue Beauville, lined with beautiful half-timbered buildings. Continue your tour on foot, visiting first Saint-Caprais cathedral, before stopping off at the city’s Fine Art museum which houses a remarkable collection of Goya paintings, amongst other works. 

Agen, which is famous for its Ente plum, also has many other delicious local food products for you to try during your holidays. If dining in a restaurant, order a plate of “estofinade” a dish made from dried fish which became popular in the region during the 17th century, or a serving of rabbit with prunes. And as a pre-dinner appetizer, opt for some of the South-West’s unbeatable foie gras. For pudding, try a portion of “pescajoune” or “tourtière,” delicious apple or plum cakes.
